Spider-man PS4 Review

Spider-man has long been one of the most recognizable and notable heroes in the Marvel Lineup. The PS4 version of the hero was a welcome return to the Webslingers adventures and it didn’t disappoint. Armed with a new suit and a new story to tell, the Webhead tools around Manhattan rescuing innocent bystanders from thugs, disarming bombs with his Spider-bot, and finding sweet sweet collectibles. The story telling and voice acting in this game is superb. Peter and Mary Jane’s apparent break feels just as awkward as it should, Peter’s relationship with Otto Octavious seems hopeful until the very end, and you can feel just how much Peter and MJ miss Harry Osborn. The overall story is incredibly well written and interesting, and it ties the DLC in so well you feel like it was part of the game all along.

Let’s get to the gameplay. Web swinging around Manhattan feels amazing, each web attaching to an actual building in game and altering your swings accordingly. The myriad of abilities you unlock along the way feels like a natural progression and you find yourself using them all equally as opposed to some games where you unlock that one key ability and never use anything again. The combat is fluid and easy to follow, with a beautifully incorporated Spider Sense that helps you keep combos going, without feeling like it’s in the way or making it all too easy. There are even a few side missions and villain specific missions that will change up gameplay and make you rethink many of the moves and tools the game has provided you to that point.

We can’t forget the costumes. Spidey has some of the most varied and storied costumes in comics history and the team at Insomniac have done a masterful job curating a collection of costumes that will tickle both the casual Spider-Man fan and the purist. Scarlet Spider, Spider Punk, and the Famous Bagman all make appearances. The suits are combined with suit powers, but these aren’t restricted to the suits that unlock them. Odds are you will find the one or two suit powers that fit your combat style, but it’s worth playing with all of them at least once, if for nothing but the experience.

All in all, this is not only the best Spider Man game to date, it is quite possibly one of the best games of the year. The core game is a complete game on its own with an excellent story, a fleshed out world, and bug free gameplay. The DLC is full bodied and fun, no cosmetics or reskinned missions. And it’s even got a Stan Lee cameo. Excelsior!.
